Credit & Evaluation
Stanford offers a wide array of Summer Session courses through more than
30 departments in the schools of Humanities and Sciences, Earth Sciences, and Engineering. Students can expect Stanford and visiting students to be
enrolled in summer courses. The breadth of courses for Stanford Summer Session
2008 allows each student to develop his or her interests in relatively small
classes with accessible instructors. For a list of courses, see 2008 Summer Courses.
Course Load
All students, degree candidates, summer visitors, graduates, or undergraduates, are limited to 20 quarter units. A normal full-time program for continuing undergraduates in the summer is 12-14 units. All International students requiring a student visa from Stanford are required to enroll in a minimum of 8 units.
Credit Transfer
Summer visitors wishing to receive credit at their home institutions for work completed at Stanford are encouraged to obtain pre-approval for their courses and should determine with their campus officials the correct procedures for credit transfer. The Stanford calendar is based on the quarter system. The unit of credit is the quarter unit, generally evaluated as equivalent to two-thirds of a semester unit.
Audit Status
Stanford does not confer credit for auditing, nor is a permanent record kept of courses audited. Auditors are expected to be observers rather than active participants in the courses they attend, unless the instructors request attendance on a different basis. Auditors are not permitted in courses such as language or laboratory science courses, art courses with studio work, athletics or other types of individualized instruction. Auditors do not register (enroll) in classes. Transcripts are not available for courses taken as audit status.
